Markets Enter the Second Half of 2026 on Stronger Footing
Good day,
We are approaching the end of the “dog days of summer,” traditionally the hottest days of the year. The phrase dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans and Sirius, the “Dog Star,” which appeared alongside the sun during the height of summer.
In many ways, today’s equity markets have been just as hot. If there is a modern-day “Dog Star” for investors, it may be artificial intelligence (AI), which continues to be one of the major themes driving markets, innovation and corporate investment.
Strong markets are meant to be enjoyed, but occasional storms are a normal part of investing. Markets will always experience periods of uncertainty and volatility. Historically, these periods have come and gone, which is why maintaining perspective and staying focused on the longer term remains so important.
Market Update
Markets have continued to benefit from resilient economic growth and strong corporate earnings. AI investment remains a significant driver, particularly among large technology companies, although investors are increasingly focused on which companies can turn that spending into sustainable profits.
Canada has also shown signs of improving economic stability, while international markets continue to provide important diversification opportunities. Bonds and other income investments remain more attractive than they were during the years of extremely low interest rates, giving investors more options when building a balanced portfolio.
Looking toward the remainder of 2026, we are watching inflation, interest-rate decisions from the Bank of Canada and U.S. Federal Reserve, corporate earnings, Canada-U.S. trade developments, energy prices and geopolitical risks. Any of these could create periods of short-term volatility, even if the longer-term outlook remains constructive.
Staying Focused
While the outlook remains generally positive, strong markets can sometimes lead investors to become overly confident or chase what has recently performed best. Markets rarely move in a straight line, and some volatility after a strong period should not come as a surprise.
We continue to believe the better approach is to stay invested, remain diversified and focus on quality investments and long-term goals. A well-constructed portfolio is designed with changing market conditions in mind, not just what is happening today.
As always, if you have questions about your investments, your portfolio, or would simply like to review where you stand, please feel free to reach out.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
